It’s become something of a cliché, but all of the technology that we use in our life is ruining our memory. It’s not just age, or whatever is in the water, but our lifestyle and dependence on technology is really hindering our ability to remember things. Plato, the ancient Greek philosopher, was famously opposed to writing because he felt it would lead to not developing our mental faculties: “They will cease to exercise memory because they rely on that which is written, calling things to remembrance no longer from within themselves, but by means of external marks.”
We can see this today in our quotidian life, where it’s more common not to know one’s own phone number, let alone remember anyone else’s. Our mobile phones, after all, will remember this information for us. And as for important dates and appointments? Well, our Google calendar (or other organisation / calendar app) will keep track of those! Like anything else, of course, our memory needs to be used to function better. So dust off your brain, shake out the cobwebs, and put your memory to work with these games and activities below. They’re sure to improve your memory and be a workout for your brain.
